Guiding Principles
Professional Undergraduate Academic Advisors at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign are educators who guide students through their academic journey at Illinois. Academic Advisors:
- Create a welcoming environment that is inclusive of students from diverse backgrounds.
- Educate students in understanding the structure and requirements of degree programs and related campus policies utilizing advisor training and expertise specific to the student’s degree programs, policies, and procedures at Illinois.
- Encourage students to engage with the content of their discipline and build a strong foundation in their area of study to persist to graduation.
- Empower students to explore, define, and pursue academic, career, and personal goals through campus, community, and extracurricular engagement.
- Engage in purposeful dialogue with students about course performance and interests while providing advice and appropriate referrals to support informed decision making.
- Connect students to a full range of campus resources tailored to individual needs.
- Equip students with the knowledge and skills to navigate complex systems while an undergraduate student and beyond.
