Why does attendance matter and why is it important?
- Some classes give points for attendance
- To make sure you are there for any in-class assignments or activities
- Everyone learns best in slightly different ways – the best way to give yourself an advantage is to attend so you’re both hearing and, in some cases, writing/interacting with the material in addition to out-of-class readings.
- Let’s your instructor know you committed
- You are paying for the class-maybe do the math on how much a course cost
- You could get a letter of recommendation if you build a good relationship with your instructor
- You can ask questions about things you are still unclear about
Tips for better engagement in class:
- For in-person classes, sit where you are comfortable and can pay the best attention. This might be the front of the room, or you might be more comfortable somewhere else. Minimize distractions by not sitting near others who talk.
- Be prepared! Do the reading/assignments ahead of class.
- Ask questions. If you’re not someone who likes to draw attention during class, you can ask your instructor before or after class or during the scheduled “office hours” they have.
- Take notes during class.
- Participate in in-class activities & talk to people in your class – you’ll make new friends who may become study buddies
What to do if you miss class:
- Check the syllabus for the attendance policy
- Look over uploaded materials the professor went over in class (e.g. PowerPoints, worksheets, etc.)
- Ask a classmate what you missed and collect notes
- If needed, connect with the Student Assistance Center regarding absence letters
- If you know you are going to miss a class ahead of time, contact your instructor
