Past Events

Kick-Off Event

The Student Success Initiative held a Kick-Off Event on September 16, 2019, which was was attended by faculty, staff, and students.  Attendees were asked, “What policies/practices/activities are integral to a successful undergraduate student experience?”

More than 2,000 responses came back from the Kick-Off Event, other student events, and via the website. Here’s a look at the Top 10 themes. These themes helped form the discussions and ultimately the recommendations of the four task groups.

December student-focused sessions

Three dinner sessions were hosted in December 2019 at various locations across campus.  These dinner meetings focused on garnering feedback specifically from students.

  • Student Series #1  was held on December 4, 2019 at the Women’s Resource Center. The event was facilitated by Gio Guerra Perez and Jari Minnett. Eight students attended the event.
  • Student Series #2 was held on December 11, 2019 at the Bruce Nesbitt African American Cultural Center. The event was facilitated by Kathy Martensen. Fourteen students attended the event.
  • Student Series #3  was held on December 12, 2019 at the Asian American Cultural Center. The event was facilitated by Gio Guerra Perez and Jari Minnett. Eight students attended the event.

Fall student-focused sessions

At each of these sessions, students worked together to identify strengths, gaps and priorities for student success focusing on the top themes that had emerged from the September 16 Kickoff Event.

  • The Black Chorus Leadership Team/Student Affairs Lunch Bunch met on October 4, 2019. The event was facilitated by Ollie Watts Davis and Jim Hintz. Eighteen students attended the event.
  • The Provost Undergraduate Student Advisory Board met on October 4, 2019. The primary facilitator was Jari Minnett. Twenty-two students from undergraduate academic units attended the event.
  • Lunch sessions were held on November 5, 6, 15, and 18, 2019. Presentations were made by Ollie Watts Davis, Kathy Martensen, and Kevin Pitts. More than 260 students were involved.
  • DGS Leaders met on November 13, 2019. The event was facilitated by Kathy Martensen and Jari Minnett. Sixteen Division of General Studies students attended the event.

Informational Sessions

At these sessions, Facilitator Ollie Watts Davis shared about the initiative’s work and how to become involved.
